December 28, 1523 After the fall of the Guardians. I was about twelve years old at the time. I had been working in the kitchens now for close to five years. It was my job to scrub the pots and pans used to make the mater's meals as well as to clean the counters and floors after Cook was done with the meal. It was hard work, but I was use to it. I had spent most of my free time that day outside. I spent any time I could outside and away from the master. It was a warm day in the desert. The sun was shining bright and there were no clouds to offer any comfort of shade. I didn't care. I just didn't want to be inside when I didn't have to be. I wasn't going to stay in the kitchens with Cook. She loved to yell at me and would look for any reason to smack me with her broom. I suppose I did give her plenty of reasons on my own as well, and this day turned out to be no different. The heat of the day brought out a lot of different animals, coming out to warm themselves in the sun. There were a lot of lizards out particularly. I loved to chase and catch lizards when I was out. They are my favorite animal. I caught several while I was out, at least six were caught up in my apron as I tried to keep them all. I looked into the folds of fabric at them piled on top of each other in a tangled mess, and it made me smile. That was when the idea struck me. I was going to trick Cook. It wasn't quite noon yet, Cook would be in her office going over her recipes and plans for lunch. I snuck into the kitchen and grabbed one of the large pots that she used often and one by one I gently set each lizard into the bottom of it before I placed the lid on top and set the pot up on the counter for Cook to find. I knew I was going to get in trouble, but I felt it was worth it. I was still mad at her for smacking me with her broom because I stuck my finger in the cream for breakfast earlier. I wanted to see what it tasted like! I heard Cook stirring. I knew she would be coming out into the kitchen soon so I quickly ran over to a counter and pretended like I was working. When she walked into the kitchen, the first thing she noticed was the pot sitting out of its place. She stopped and looked at it for a long time. That look alone was priceless. She was looking at it like it had grown a head. It took everything I had not to burst into laughter right then. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, she lifted the lid and looked inside. The shriek that came out of her finally did send me into a fit of laughter! I got the broom for that too, but it was worth every second of it. More stories to come...
